The Future of Economic Development in Africa—What explains the persistence of poverty and underdevelopment in some countries around the world? How can countries accelerate economic growth? How will climate change and political crises impact the future of economic development around the globe? Primarily relying on examples from African countries, this class will introduce students to the drivers of economic development. The objective of the class is to provide students with a foundational understanding of how history, demographics, geography, state capacity, politics, and policy choices impact economic growth and development. In addition, students will develop the analytical skills needed to make sense of policy debates in international development and global compacts like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
