This course examines U.S. foreign policy towards Africa through a multi-sector historical lens. The primary aims are to deepen students’ understanding of U.S. policy priorities on the continent; examine the tension between U.S. interests and values in its engagement with Africa; and explore the African contexts into which U.S. policy is employed. The course begins by identifying current and historical U.S. interests in Africa and will also highlight the agency, interests and strategies of African nations in their engagement with the United States.
