This course explores the English language literature on politics in the western part of the Arab World: the Maghreb or North Africa. We cover Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. To familiarize students with the region we will utilize case studies and the analytical tools adopted in the books assigned for this course. Beyond that, the course explores a number of important themes for the region in depth. These include Islamist politics, the political economy of development, regime transitions, women and minority rights, the politics of “Berber” identity, regional issues including the Western Sahara, and strategic and security relations.
