This course fulfills elective certificate requirement
In this class, students will be exposed to historical and current cases of violent conflict in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on how violent crime is financed: through corruption, crime, and illicit trafficking of drugs, weapons, wildlife, and people. In the first part of class, students will: develop an applied understanding of the key concepts and causes of violent conflict; develop an understanding of debates surrounding the nexus between crime, corruption, and illicit trafficking; and explore applied threat finance practices and techniques in conflict analysis. In the second part of class, students will examine 4 case studies to explore the concepts from part I in more detail. We will examine the civil wars in the Mano River region; the Great Lakes wars; the ongoing conflict/trafficking nexus in the Liptako-Gourma Region; and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta in Nigeria.
