‘Setting a Place for Us’ with Author and Chef Hawa Hassan

On Thursday, February 12th at 6:00 pm EST, please join Georgetown’s African Studies Program in a conversation with James Beard Award-winning  Somali chef, TV host, entrepreneur, and author Hawa Hassan. Hassan was born in Somalia and by the age of five, had relocated to a refugee camp in Kenya before being resettled in Seattle at the age of seven. Her mission of cultural reconnection led her to create Basbaas , the first Somali line of condiments widely available in the United States, and to write the cookbook In Bibi’s Kitchen , celebrating the recipes and stories of grandmothers from eight African nations. Hassan and faculty members will dive into her new cookbook, Setting a Place for Us , which weaves her personal experience as a refugee with stories and recipes from displaced people across the world, followed by a book signing. Georgetown students and faculty, as well as DC community members, are welcome to attend and can register here .
