African Studies Program

Distinguished Lecturer Series
The Series has brought over 300 leading Africa experts to Georgetown. Past speakers have included the current Foreign Affairs Minister of Nigeria, H.E.  Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Ambassador John L. Hirsch, former President of Cape Verde, António Monteiro, Senior Vice President of TechnoServe, Simon Winter.
The African Studies Program also introduces the Georgetown community to key experts on African Affairs, such as the Chiroma of Kano Sanusi Ado Bayero who lectured on "Nigeria, Islam, and the United States," Ambassador Howard Jeter, former envoy to Nigeria who spoke on "Nigeria's Domestic Challenges and Regional Responsibilities;" Dr. Adekeye Adebajo, Director of the Africa Program at the International Peace Academy who lectured on "Building Peace in West Africa: Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea Bissau;" and Makila James, Political Affairs Officer at the Department of State who spoke on "The Role of the U.N. in Resolving the Conflict in Sierra Leone."

The Oliver Tambo Lecture:
Past speakers have included current President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi A. Annan, former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Africana in Focus Film Series
Africana pertains to the collection of artifacts or artistic works of any of the nations of Africa reflecting geographical, historical, or cultural development.  The Africana in Focus Film Series seeks to introduce the Georgetown University community to a plethora of Africa related themes through the screening of documentaries, short films, dramas, comedies, and other film genres.

Annual Conference on African Affairs
